Texas wines win 122 medals at Decanter Awards, named region on the rise
- At the 2026 Decanter World Wine Awards, Texas wineries earned 122 medals, second only to California among US states, with 62 scoring 90 points or above.
- Decanter named Texas one of five 'Regions on the Rise' following the awards, signalling international validation of the state's modern wine industry.
- Texas has roughly 600 wineries today, up from 85 in 2005, after alcohol law reforms and a new generation of winemakers drove rapid expansion.
- The Texas High Plains AVA produces 75-85% of the state's grapes, favouring Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Mediterranean varieties suited to semi-arid conditions.
- Approximately 95% of Texas wine currently sells within the state; the awards recognition is expected to open distribution outside Texas as producers build export presence.
